TOPIC
The theme for the program is Urban Furniture and Placemaking. Urban furniture refers to objects and facilities located in urban community spaces that provide various services and functions to the community. It is one of the essential elements of the urban environment that contributes to humans and their activities. Although comparatively small in scale, urban furniture plays a significant role, in determining the quality of an urban environment and in representing the image of a city. Of all the landscape elements, urban furniture has the closest contact and interaction with humans. Urban furniture design involves a wide range of concerns, including function, environment, and meaning. The students will be involved in contributing towards urban furniture of Auroville through enquiry into the principles of placemaking. The end result is to create a cohesive unit that creates greater value than just the sum of its parts.
Besides designing and building urban furniture, students will get exposure to the following subjects: transformative leadership principles, system thinking, climate responsive design, vernacular architecture, earth as a building material, biological waste water treatment, sustainable water management, ecological landscaping, renewable energy systems and energy efficiency, ecological sanitation, urban agriculture, organic farming, social entrepreneurship, sustainable waste management, alternative education, project planning and management.
APPROACH
The program is designed and based on the 3H (hands, head and heart) approach, which attempts to actualize participants’ inner strength, to activate critical system thinking and to work on students’ technical capacities of designing and implementing projects. Besides working on the design, implementation and documentation, each participating student will design and write a project of his/her choice, which aims at bringing environmental and social justice and wellbeing. The aim is to train a new generation of environmental and socially responsible leaders that are capable of connecting hands (capacity), head (system thinking) and heart (personal strength) while working on system change for a more socially and environmentally just future.
WHO WILL ATTEND THE WORKSHOP
Students and young professionals that have a strong commitment to social equity and sustainability. Participants may come from the following backgrounds: architecture, interior design, product design, engineering and related fields. All participants must commit to participating in all the program components. No prior knowledge of sustainable building design is required. Come with an open mind and lots of enthusiasm!
